Update from the CEO, April 2018

I recently returned from the annual Māori Fisheries Conference to hear the reports from Te Ohu Kai Moana and from Moana NZ. Its great to be at a hui where the scale of iwi activity is clear to see and iwi own 43% 0f all fishing quota.
While it has taken a while to get here, iwi are beginning to see the benefits of working together and there are 3 or 4 collectives working particularly with koura and paua markets. We also heard interesting work about protecting tuna and sustainability practices for our awa.
Back in our rohe we continue to make haste slowly in our commercial developments, and devote much time and effort to environmental issues especially through constant engagement with Councils and DOC. The Trustees recently directed the office to focus on developing a draft environmental strategy to be shared with the iwi later in the year.
We have great difficulty attracting our young, our qualified and our interested to join the staff of the Rūnanga. We have not had a lot of positions on offer in recent years, so maybe you are not looking out for them; and maybe we are not advertising in the places you look!
