It is with sadness we write we lost our dear cousin Nui Kupa nee MacDonald on 29th December 2023. Only two days ago her eldest daughter Carol passed away. RIP

We also acknowledge the recent passing of Norm Dewes and Bishop Richard Wallace. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with all of these whānau.

Norm Dewes was a long-time advocate for urban Māori especially in Ōtautahi, but also throughout Te Waipounamu. He moved to Christchurch from his original home in Wairoa in 1961 to complete trades training and had a long career, including leading roles at Te Putahitanga and Ngā Hau e Whā Marae.

Pīhopa o Waipounamu Richard Wallace officiated at Norm’s funeral, and accompanied him home to Wairoa. While there, Richard sadly also passed.

Richard had strong connections to Te Tauihu attending high school in Motueka and serving the Anglican Church in Whakatū and Kawatiri.

Richard and his wife Mere were both involved with Onetahua and Whakatū Marae as well as the whole Te Tauihu community. Richard was considered to be a connector and supporter of many organisations not just in Te Tauihu, but Te Waipounamu and nationally. We thank and acknowledge Mere and whānau for sharing Richard with us all.

A Ngāti Rārua delegation attended Pīhopa Wallace’s funeral.
